Vaginal discharge is a natural mechanism to keep cervix and vagina healthy and moist. Vaginal discharge may vary in thickness and color depending upon changing fertility and hormonal ratio of progesterone and estrogen inside. Cases when brown discharge is normal
Normally uterus expels all blood by the last day of periods. However, it is possible that some blood and debris remain within the uterus. This delay of time turn blood into brown color and when uterus flushes it out you notice a brown discharge.
While you are on your peak fertile days and ovulating you may observe brown discharge.

Brown discharge near your menstruation date can be an indication of early pregnancy symptom i.e. implantation bleeding. However, it also depends whether you were engaged in unprotected sexual activity recently (within the last 30days) or not. Otherwise brown vaginal discharge can be due to other reasons as well.
Other symptoms like acne, breast tenderness and bloating are observed in pregnancy as well as premenstrual syndrome. So it’s better to get your pregnancy checked with ultrasound.
Brown discharge can be an indicative factor towards the end of fertility of a woman’s reproductive life. It can either be a sign of perimenopause, the time period leading to actual menopause. If you observe other signs like insomnia, hot flashes and mood swings it may mean that menopause is near.
When is brown discharge a worrying sign?
Always remain watchful about other symptoms you experience along with brown vaginal discharge. Above mentioned conditions are safe but seek immediate medical help if:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease is the root cause of brown discharge. Other symptoms include fever, painful sex, burning and itching while urination and foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
- Brown discharge is also caused by the ovarian It is actually a sac that forms inside ovary filled with fluid. It exerts pressure and pain in lower abdomen and thighs. Pain during sex and menstruation are other symptoms. For some women ovarian cyst is painless and no above symptom is observed. They are diagnosed via ultrasound.
- It is due to life threatening condition of cervical cancer. According to National Cancer Institute, “Of all women population, only 0.7% women are declared with this condition but the risk still exists”.
- It is due to hormonal imbalance condition of PCO’s. Other possible symptoms could be weight gain, acne and hair growth.
